We started the day off with going to the computer lab. Then, Danni read her blog.
Two-Bit and Pony visit Johnny, and he asks for a copy of GWTW . Johnny doesn't want to die, but it was worth it. Johnny's mom comes and it upsets him. They see Dally, who is OK. On their way home, they see Cherry. She and Pony argue, but remember what they have in common. Then, everyone did an AR test How Many Days to America? A Thanksgiving story. Then, they did a STAR test. The bell rang, and we left.

We start the day with blog corrections. We talk about past and present tense in writing. Then, even after my protesting, I was forced to write this blog. Next, Ms. Nakada told us to read our chapter 7 summaries to our partners. Chapter 7 was about the boys at the hospital, and the Curtis brothers talking to reporters while they wait to hear about Dally and Johnny. At home, Pony falls asleep and wakes up to make breakfast. He tells Darry about his nightmares, and we learn that he has PTSD from his parents dying. Two-Bit and Steve come by and show them the newspaper. Two-Bit "babysits" Pony and they run into Randy who says he's not going to be in the rumble. After reading our summaries, we get our tests back and correct them. Then, Ms. Nakada told us to get our books out, and we had silent reading. Then, the bell rang, and we were off to lunch.

Today, we went over the blog and took out our reading journals. We went over our summaries of chapter 6 of The Outsiders with our partners. Johnny tells Dally he wants to go back. When they get back to the church, it was on fire. Pony and Johnny rush in to save the kids as the church caves in. Dally is ok, but Johnny is in bad shape. Darry and Pony are reunited. After we discussed our summaries, we took out The Outsiders and went through the chapter looking through all the important plot points. Ms. Nakada then asked us if we would have turned ourselves in for murdering Bob, and if we would have run away. We then returned to reading through the chapter, Ms. Nakada asked some questions about a new character named Jerry. We returned reading through the book again and finished up the chapter. Then, we took out our English notebooks and wrote down our fall semester English scores. Ms. Nakada yelled at Mathan for taking up Victoria's space. The bell rang, and we went to lunch.

To start the class, like always, we take out our reading journals and read our chapter summaries of The Outsiders to our shoulder partners. Ponyboy and Johnny fall asleep at the church. Ponyboy wakes up, and Johnny had left to the store to buy supplies. He comes back with a copy of Gone With The Wind, peroxide, food, and cigarettes. Ponyboy and Johnny bleach and dye their hair as a disguise. One morning, they wake up and watch the sunrise. They talk about the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay." Ponyboy and Johnny played games and smoked throughout the weekend. Dally comes to pick them up and takes them out to eat. He also comes with some news and a letter from Sodapop. Ponyboy learns that Cherry becomes a spy for the greasers. Once we're done discussing the chapter, we take out our English writing notebooks. Our assignment is to write an eight sentence paragraph using the green, yellow, and red tactic we learned yesterday. After we're done with our paragraphs, we used the last few minutes of class to get ahead with either our project that's due Monday or read The Outsiders. The bell rang,  and we went to lunch.

 HW: RJ 2.3 T.O. ch.5 p.68-84

Today, we started by taking out our English Journals and reading our chapter 4 summaries of The Outsiders to our table partners. In chapter 4, Ponyboy and Johnny are at the park because Pony needed to cool off after Darry hit him. The blue Mustang comes around again, and a couple of Socs come and say that a greaser is dirty, and they suggest they need a wash after Pony spits on one of them. Then, David holds Pony under the water. That's when Johnny pulls out his switch blade and stabs Bob. Johnny and Pony both get scared, so they try to find Dally. Dally gives them a loaded gun and fifty dollars and tells them to get out of town. He directs them to catch a train to Windrixville and go up to Jay Mountain where there is an abandoned church where they can hide out.

After we go over our summaries, we get out our Writing Journals and add more to our plot lines. After we finished our plot lines, we opened our table of contents and add Step-Up To Writing. Ms. Nakada then explains that Step-Up To Writing is a color -coded writing system that helps with organization and structure. We talked about how to organize a paragraph. We talked about how green means go and how that would be our topic sentence/thesis statement. Yellow= provide reasons, details and facts. Red= explain, evidence, example. We went over how to start a paragraph. We started with a topic sentence then give a reason, detail or fact. Provide evidence, examples, or explanation. Ms. Nakada then explained that each highlighted mark means the start of a new sentence. Then, the bell rang and we went to lunch.

HW: Enjoy your weekend!

To start the day, we wrote in our agendas about the focal point of what were learning in class, and we read and corrected our blog from the previous day. We then corrected our homework with our partner and after discussing the chapter with class. In the chapter, it starts with Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally stealing some cigarettes from a drug store. After, they go to a drive-in movie; meeting two lovely Socs girls named Cherry and Marcia. Dally is rude to those girls; Cherry and, surprisingly Johnny, helps them.

When Pony and Cherry go to get popcorn, Pony explains to her how Johnny disturbingly got jumped by the Socs. After Pony explains his horrific story she tells him not all Socs are like that and how "things are rough all over." After discussing our novel, The Outsiders, we got a paper giving information about the reading assignments and books we can read. We are told to reach a goal of 1,000,000 words. Some projects consist of a story map, timeline, a scrapbook, a model, a social media page, and annotation. We finished the class with silent reading our book The Outsiders.

Alan's First Blog

AGENDA: BLOG/CORRECTIONS: R.J Check. The Outsiders Elements of Plot.

HW: R.J 1.2 T.O. Ch. 2.

Today, on Thursday, us Desperate Cheetos discussed our blogs, got out our reading journals, wrote our names on it as well as kept a record of the books we are reading and discussing. Right now, that is  The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Our discussion consisted of a quick summary, which was that Ponyboy is walking home from the movies and introduces his brothers: Soda and Darry. He's a greaser and gets jumped by the Socs. He calls for help and the gang saves him. We meet the gang and learn that Pony and Darry don't get along. They are orphans, and Pony loves Soda best. Soda wants to marry Sandy.

In our English Notebook (not Reading Journal), in our Table of Contents for page 2 we put: "Elements of Plot." and on 4 pages away from the Fall Quotes, Questions and Songs of the Week we put "Elements of Plot" on its title. We discussed the Elements of the Plot and what are the points of them and their correct placement (ex: In a good story the conflict is not solved early on, otherwise the reader wouldn't be engaged.) Also, the difference between an external and internal conflict. The page read:
Elements of a Plot are the components of a story.

Welcome!
Course Outlines/Expectations
First Day Letter
HW: Get C.O. Signed
Write a letter to Ms. Nakada.

My fourth period students came in and settled into their new seats in their new classroom.

I signed programs as students wrote down the agenda and homework.

Then, I passed out the syllabus and the course outlines, and we started by going over the expectations for the course. We talked about reading, writing, listening, and speaking through reading and writing workshops.

We also discussed materials, homework, assessment, and rules.

I read my first day letter, and students are to write a letter back for homework. I can't wait to read these and am excited about the upcoming school year!

Day 2 Agenda

Collect C.O./Letters
Quote/Question/Song of the Week
The Outsiders
HW: RJ 1.1 Chapter 1 of The Outsiders

Students filed into their seats from yesterday and started writing down the agenda.

We started class by discussing a blog name and came up with "Desperate Cheetos."

Then, students made a pile at the aisle so I could collect the Course Outlines and Letters. We talked about homework routines and how, if you want to get better grades, all you have to do is work school into your after-school routine and you will do better.

After that, we started our English Notebooks by labeling our Table of Contents. We started discussing the quote of the week: "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Then, we answered the question of the week: What do you hope?

I played the song, "We're Going To Be Friends" by The White Stripes and, to be honest, I cried a little because that song is so sweet.

I took roll and students read a little of The Outsiders and before you know it the bell rang. That was it for the day!
