HW: Happy weekend! Prep for Inktober!

Hi. First, we did blog corrections, and they had to choose me, even though I didn't want to. Next, Ms. Nakada taught us how to use an AlphaSmart. Then, she passed them out to people who wanted to use them. Ms. Nakada had to tell people to be quiet, because people were talking. Then, Ms. Nakada was telling everyone about body paragraphs. Then, someone asked Ms. Nakada if she could tell David to stop typing so loud, and she told him to move to her desk in the back. Then, someone came into our class and asked if he could finish his test. Ms. Nakada asked why people who writing the essay kept putting The Outsiders in quotations. Then, she told people if they were using an AlphaSmart, to turn them off. Finally, out of nowhere the bell rang.

First, we walked into class and got out our binder reminders and wrote down the agenda. Nancy read her blog, and we corrected it. Then, Nancy had to choose me, even when there were people who wanted to do the blog and I didn't. Thanks, Nancy. Then, Ms. Nakada started explaining what Inktober is. Inktober is a month where you learn to use ink pens and create cool drawings with them. When we were done discussing Inktober, Ms. Nakada went onto her Instagram and showed us the pictures of students with the banned books. When the class saw Kane's face, everyone laughed.

Then, we worked on the pre-write for our essay. Everyone was very quiet, almost too quiet, nobody was talking unless asking a question. Charles then asked me to put him in the blog, and there isn't a lot to write about because everyone is so quiet, so I did.  After a while of doing work, we looked at Abtin's reasons for why Ponyboy will not stay gold. Then, we went off to lunch.

Today, we started off the day by correcting Arezou's blog. Ms. Nakada told us to take out our English Notebooks and turn to page 8. She also asked what a thesis statement is. A thesis statement is what you're talking about in a paragraph or essay. There are three parts to an essay: Introduction, Body Paragraphs, and a Conclusion. For the introduction in an essay we have to provide a thesis statement and provide reasoning. After Ms. Ciafone came in, and told Ms. Nakada that she had to go to an IEP meeting. Ms. Ciafone said that "You always need to have a strong couple of sentences in the beginning of the essay."

After a few minutes, Ms. Nakada came back. She asked if we understood what a "lead" or a "hook" was. She told us to take out another piece of paper for an essay pre-write on The Outsiders. She said we are allowed to type it, but everything is done in class. She gave us examples about what we should write about. Ms. Nakada asked what tone meant, and Mathan raised his hand and said that tone meant, "vibe." She asked which one of the Curtis brothers supports "The Poverty Myth." Ms. Nakada gave us more examples for the essay that we chose. The bell rang, and we went off to lunch.

We started the day off by correcting Zamari's blog. Then, Ms. Nakada asked us if we wanted to take a picture with a banned book since it is banned books week. After that, Ms. Nakada told us that we needed to write down our reading logs in our journal. We took out "The Poverty Myth," and went over it. Ms. Nakada said that Emerson is such a unique school because it is so diverse. We talked about how teachers need to not make such assumptions. Different solutions we can find in the text were: "Avoid references to free or reduced-price lunches," "Conduct in-service training about issues of poverty" and "Respect for the unique challenges faced by low-income students." The story ends by Brenna getting straight A's by going to night school and proves the teachers wrong.  Ms. Nakada then says that you can find the answers to questions by the patterns they have. We then turn to our English book and write the title Essay Structure on page 8. We just wrote a sentence and out of nowhere, the bell rang and we went off to lunch.

Hi, everyone, just to let you know, I am not happy to be here. Thanks a lot, Victoria, you suck at Fortnite. Anyway, we started by talking about banned books. Ms. Nakada said THE S WORD. Everyone started freaking out, and I'm like, "You guys are immature."

We started talking about banned books and watched a video set in Tiananmen Square. Thousands of people died here, and you're not allowed to talk about it now in China. Somethings you do things in the USA you can't do in other places. Kuper just asked a weird question. I'm Sleep. Omg, to think The Hate U Give was on the banned books list. I'm shocked. James called me Li'l Bill. Little does he know we all know he looks like Pennywise.

Quote: "Banning books gives us silence when we need speech. It closes our ears when we need to listen. It makes us blind when we need sight"- Stephen Chbosky author of The Perks of being a Wallflower. James a hater.

Question: Do read banned books? Yes it crazy how books can be banned.

Song: "Cult of Personalty" Living Color. The WWE wrestler Cm Punk uses this and he's kinda crazy. Then, we turned in our book projects. Then, we went off to lunch.

We started the day off by Leila reading her blog, and of course, she has to choose me. Then, Ms. Nakada passed out D.C. field trip flyers and went over it. She said after, to take out our reading journals and go to the reading record. After, Ms. Nakada gave us an article and told us to read it. Kane was annoying me and telling me to choose him over and over again.  Anyways, we had to underline and ask questions about the text. The story is about a girl who is treated badly and about the myth that poor students can't achieve academically. Then, the text talks about low income schools. Next, Ms. Nakada told us to pass the papers clockwise and read what they wrote and answer their questions. After we went clockwise a couple of times, she asked us questions like, ''What was the text about?'' Then, Ms. Nakada told us to pack up our stuff. Finally, the bell rang and we went to lunch.

AGENDA:
Blog/corrections
The writing process
T.O. book v. movie
HW: R.J. 6.2 Read a book for 20-30 minutes.

We all know what we do every day, we come in the classroom, write down the agenda and correct the blog, so I'm not going to say "To start the day..." Maria read the blog today, and then we corrected it. Maria picked me, of course, because I'm doing the blog, obviously. I'm not surprised though, I knew she was going to pick me. She told me she was going to pick me at least three times from the start of first period. She said she was going to pick Leila, but I told her to pick me so I could get it over with, and because everyone wanted me to get picked. So, I hope everyone who wanted me to get picked is satisfied, and who knows I just might pick Leila. You never know.

Anyway,  after we corrected the blog, and after Kane got the bug off his pants and put it outside, we finished watching The Outsiders. Then, we took out a piece of notebook paper for a quick write about if The Outsiders movie stays faithful to the book. I looked around the room trying to figure out what to put in the blog, because I feel like I'm obligated to make it kind of long and, fun fact, I only got four hours of sleep, so I need everything I can get. I feel like I summed up mostly everything the class did so far.

Anyway, I heard Kane tell Ms. Nakada that Victoria was breathing too hard and that it was bothering him. I thought it was funny because it's usually not something a person complains about. Don't worry, Victoria. You didn't do anything wrong. You're just trying to survive by breathing peacefully. We finished our quick write and then highlighted it. Just as I started the blog, I'm not going to say the "The bell rang, and we went off to lunch," but it did, and I don't have anything original, therefore the bell rang, and we went off to lunch.

T.O. Book vs. Movie

H.W. R.J. 6.1 Read a
book for 20-30 minutes

Today, we started out with Diana reading her blog. After Ms. Nakada corrected her blog, we took our English Notebooks out. We went over the quote of the week which is: "Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard." The quote was by Kevin Durant. After that we went over the Question of the Week and talked about it. Lastly, we heard the song of the week which was "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman. I think the song was a love song, because it says, "I've got a job that pays all our bills" so it's explaining how she pays for her children's stuff, and he doesn't do anything. After, we went through some people's favorite lyrics from the song. Then, we started The Outsiders, while Ms. Nakada corrected some agendas. We were at the part where Ponyboy asks Cherry if she's going to go see Johnny, but her answer was no. After, Ponyboy asks the gang why they like fighting. Then, all of them headed to the rumble. There, the Shepard gang was already waiting for them. After, the greasers got there, the Socs arrived. Darry and Paul came up to the front, and they said they were going to take each other. Soon after, Dally came running from the woods and the rumble started. While they were fighting, the Socs couldn't take much more of it, and ended up running away. Ponyboy and Dally then headed to the hospital to tell Johnny the news. First, they got pulled over, but ended up getting an escort to the hospital. When they got to the hospital, Johnny tells Ponyboy to "Stay Gold." Johnny dies after, and Dally starts crying.

HW: Have a good weekend. Read to combat boredom.

We started the period by going to the book fair. When we came back, we went straight to reading and correcting Nathaniel's blog. We then continued watching the movie. Dally came to the church. Dally gave Pony a note from Sodapop. Dally made fun of Ponyboy's hair then they went to Dairy Queen. The Greasers now have a spy, Cherry. Johnny said that he was going to turn himself in and asked if his parents were worried about him. Dally said that they weren't. When they came back the church was on fire. Ponyboy and Johnny went to save the kids who were playing in the church. Ponyboy caught on fire while the roof of the church crashed down on Johnny. They went to the hospital, and Ponyboy apologized to Darry. Soda, Darry, and Ponyboy went home to get ready for the rumble with the Socs. Darry didn't think that Ponyboy should have participated in the rumble. The newspaper said Ponyboy was a hero. Randy wanted to talk to Ponyboy about how Greasers are Greasers and Socs are Socs. Ponyboy and Two-Bit went to see Johnny and Johnny talk about how he used to talk about how he wanted to die and saying that 16 wasn't long enough to live. After watching the movie the bell rang and class ended.

HW: RJ 5.3 Read 20-30 minutes of a book. GET PARENT SIGNATURE!

We start the day, by coming in to the class room and writing the agenda down in our binder reminders. Then, Kuper read her blog and had to pick someone. Kuper picked Lelia at first, but since she didn't want to go, Kuper picked me. Then, Ms. Nakada told everybody to take out their reading journals and write the book down that they're reading; Ms. Nakada explained what we're supposed to do and made sure everyone was clear on what to do. After, she said, ''If I haven't checked your binder reminder, put it at the end of the table."

Ms. Nakada turned on The Outsiders; we are supposed to write in our English notebook on our T chart if the book and the movie are alike. Ponyboy and Johnny were laying outside and Ponyboy had a bad dream that two people were leaving, a man and probably his wife were on the train tracks in their car and got hit by the train. Ponyboy got home and Darry hit him and he ran away. Then, Johnny, and Johnny and Ponyboy go to the park. Ponyboy sees the blue Mustang the Socs get out of the car and it is Socs. The Socs get out of the car and say, "Do you know what greasers are?" and one of the Socs said, "White trash with long greasy hair." The Socs and Pony and Johnny get into a fight with the Socs and Johnny stabs Bob; Bob dies and the rest of the Socs ran off. Pony and Johnny go to Dally and ask him what do. He gave them money and a gun and told them where to go. Ponyboy and Johnny go to the train, and get on, and got to the church. They go inside and lay down and go to sleep. Johnny left and went to go get some food, and Johnny and Pony go back and forth about Pony not letting Johnny cut his hair. Finally, Pony lets Johnny cut his hair and bleach it. Johnny does the same. Pony and Johnny both go to sleep and wake up and they eat. James said Johnny's toes look like chicken wings. Pony and Johnny try to catch a bunny, but they didn't. Then, they go to sleep and wake up outside, and Pony said his poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay." Ms. Nakada paused the movie, and she said make sure you read tonight. Then, the bell rang and we went to lunch.

H.W RJ 5.2 20-30 minutes of a book.

Today, we started the period by writing down the agenda and doing our blog corrections. Then, we opened our English books and started our Fall Reading Plans. We started writing down the books that we've read this school year, and Ms. Nakada was explaining how it's okay to read two books at once. She also started recommending some books that would be good for us to read. There is this new club at our school, where you would read as many books as you can from the book list. The club is called Project LIT Book Club. Then, Ms. Nakada gave us time to choose a book from her library. The book that I chose was, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. After we chose our book, we had to analyze the extent to which a film remains faithful / departs from the text for The Outsiders. Ms. Nakada had started to telling us about Speech & Debate. Then, we started watching The Outsiders movie. That's when the bell rang, and we went to lunch.

It's week 5, and we started off the day with the quote of the week: "You get tough like me and you don't get hurt. You look out for yourself and nothin' can touch you." Dallas Winston (The Outsiders). We talk about this quote and what it means to a teacher and to students. I think that this quote means that friends, companions help each other grow, and succeed together and help each other achieve their goals. Then, we continue with a very sad, heart-breaking song, "Nothing Compares 2 U," performed by Sinead O'Connor. The song was written by Prince but was made famous by Sinead O'Connor. This song is about how probably she was dumped by her boyfriend, and she was very heart broken, but she compares how great he was and that nothing great would ever compare to him. My favorite line from this song was, "I could put my arms around every boy I see, but they'd only remind me of you." Later, we go into our English journals, and we make a Fall Reading Plan. We pick our top three books, or series and list them on page six. It's Tuesday, and I totally forgot, so let me speed things up, the bell rang and I was left behind to finish this blog. Then, I went to lunch with Yeab and David.

To begin our day, we corrected Abtin's blog. Then, Abtin decides to choose me, weird right? In chapter 12 of The Outsiders, Ponyboy goes to the hearing and the outcome was nothing like Pony expected. However, Pony is still in his downward spiral and threatens the Socs with a broken bottle. Darry and Pony fight and Soda runs away. The brothers figure out there problems and decide to stick together. Pony reads a letter Johnny wrote and got inspiration to write The Outsiders. Then, Ms. Nakada checked our reading journals. Christian and Maggie read their summaries, and the class applauded. We answered some questions. We also recited some of the book, and let me tell you, there was not one touched heart. We watch a few minutes of the video. Then, the bell rang, and we went to our 5th period class.

Today, we started of the day correcting Mathan's blog. The Quote of the week: "Can you see the sunset real good on the West side? You can see it on the east side too." Ponyboy Curtis The Outsiders by SE Hinton. The song of the week: "We Shall Overcome" Pete Seeger-Bernice Johnson-Reagon. We talk about Labor Day and why we have Labor Day off. We have Labor Day off because people can't work everyday. There is a certain age when kids can work, because they need to focus on school. People need to take a break from working and can go on vacation. "We Shall Overcome" means to have a break from Labor. After that we take out our Reading Journals and read Chapter 8 to our table partners. After we do that, we are allowed to read for the rest of the period. While we read, Ms. Nakada comes and checks our Reading Journals. The reading time gives us enough time to read at least one chapter. Ms. Nakada says we can pack up. Then, the bell rang, and we went off to lunch.
